The moment when a product, company or even a person decide to remodel themselves because the old version wasn’t quite good enough. It was slightly surprising after another successful and exciting season of football, that the Football League announced proposals to alter the current format and create a new system from the 2019-20 season onwards. The proposal’s press release was titled ‘A whole game solution’, but it’s unclear what problems they are trying to solve.  Firstly, the Football League would move from it’s current four division system into a five division format, each with 20 teams. Currently, the Championship, League One and League Two all contain 24 teams. The new format would mean adding a League Three and reducing every league size to 20 teams. Furthermore, the total teams in the Football League would increase from 72 to 100. Secondly, the announcement also proposed changes to the League Trophy and the creation of a group structure of three games before the knockout stages. In order for the changes to go ahead 90% of the current 72 clubs in the Football League must agree to them, with the final decision being made at the League’s AGM in June 2017. This leaves over year of slow and painful debate about whether the likes of Wrexham should be granted the pleasure of becoming a Football League club again. Like any great debate, let’s kick things off with a nice list of pros and cons. Why change? Football League Chief Executive Shaun Harvey explained the aim of the changes in his statement following the announcement; “The whole game needs to come together. It is about finding solutions that support English football for the future.”. An era of modernisation is occurring across football bringing even more money to the game and the Football League don’t want to be left behind.  Condensing the Football League into a five tier system will certainly allow for less fixture congestion. Currently the lower tiers are full of Tuesday and Wednesday nights which require the likes of Carlisle to travel down to Plymouth. Luck of the draw but also completely impractical. As well as this, there are constant fixture clashes with English clubs and UEFA competitions. Reducing the number of teams in each league should allow for a more succinct fixture list and travel schedule. These changes could increase the prospect of English clubs in Europe and according to the Football League, increase the status of the FA Cup Competition.  A further potential benefit would be an increased chance of promotion and relegation which theoretically could improve the entertainment value across all divisions. The Football League also believe that this would increase the importance of each fixture and improve season ticket sales. Finally, the Football League believes that these proposed changes would increase revenue for teams and therefore, improve financial security for clubs. If it ain’t broke? Recently there have been protests and petitions for change in football, but none of this change was aimed towards league structures. What the fans want is reduced ticket prices, and accountability and transparency from owners. There are many aspects of football that need to be altered but the structure of the lower tiers wasn’t one of them. Several club chairmen have spoken out against the proposals.  Mark Lawn of Bradford City said that the reduction in teams and fixtures would reduce income considerably, as there would be fewer home fixtures. There are suggestions that Premier League clubs would cover the losses for those in the lower tier if the changes were to go ahead. Chester FC chairman Simon Olorenshaw stated that more detail about the financial impact of these changes needs to be explained. A rebrand is one thing, but sweeping changes which would completely alter the British footballing landscape is another. I am undecided as to whether these changes are for the better, but what I am clear on is that no one asked for them. Change is needed in football, but not necessarily to the fixture list.

The then owners, Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone made the executive decision that it was in the interests of the club to create a badge that resembled an Italian coat of arms. Without any consultation a new QPR was born. The club was rebranded and it signified the beginnings of some reckless and difficult years. Financial nouse does not always bring happiness (money isn’t everything).  Two promotions and two relegations later a decision was made to redesign this cheap abomination and this time proper consultation took place. In December 2015 fans were asked to vote online for their favourite design. The four options were hybrids of the various crests which have appeared throughout the club’s history and more importantly, it represented a club that respected and valued it’s fans. Option 2, a classic less is more approach proved to be unanimously popular and on the final home game of the 15/16 season the new badge was revealed.  As a QPR fan and a football fan I felt a strange sense of emotion. The only reasoning I can put behind this surprising sensation was democracy. Much has been written about the leaders of football and the forgotten fan but the power of an online poll to unite a fragmented fanbase is unbelievable.  QPR’s redesign sits alongside fan ownership and ticket price protests as a win for fans and the beautiful game. However, it proves once again that individual owners can make long lasting changes to clubs and the fans remain powerless. The struggles of Charlton and Leeds against tyrannical owners this season illustrate that the power in football remains with the few.

This statement represents everything that an athlete endeavours to achieve: to break barriers and break records. Unfortunately, Williams test driver Susie Wolff reached her limit, announcing last week that she will retire from motorsport after the Race of Champions on 20 November. Susie Wolff had moulded a successful career in a sport dominated by money and men. Formula One has had a murky past when it comes to equality, with 86-year-old former British driver, Sir Stirling Moss claiming in 2013 that women lacked the mental aptitude for motor racing. F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone has never shied away from a derogatory comment in the past and you need look no further than the ‘pit girls’ to establish the sport’s feeling towards women. But, that did not stop Susie Wolff. At last year’s British GP she became the first woman to take part in a Grand Prix weekend for 22 years. At just 32-years-old, it seems like a young age to be retiring, but Wolff realised that her dream of racing in F1 just “isn’t going to happen”. It is almost unimaginable what the moment must feel like when you suddenly realise that your dream just “isn’t going to happen”. It is tragic that in 2015 the possibility of a female racing in F1 again cannot happen and will not happen. The very position of Wolff as a test driver signifies the position of females in motorsport: second place. Williams ruled out the possibility of her being a support driver earlier this year and for Wolff this signified the beginning of the end. NASCAR in the USA has featured successful female drivers such as Danica Patrick for several years, but Wolff herself has noted the absence of support for females from within the sport. In a recent blog for the Huffington Post, Wolff wrote: “we have two issues – not enough young girls starting in karting at a young age and no clear role model. Sometimes you just have to see it to believe it”. It has been traditionally thought in the world of motorsport that women are not built to drive: physically, mentally and emotionally, and many cite the reason that females are not taking up the sport, is that they purely just do not want to. Wolff is hoping to work with the Motor Sports Association and inspire a new generation of young girls to take to the track, but it is disappointing that the very role model that this new generation could look to will not be on the grid. Throughout F1’s sixty-five-year history, five women have entered a Grand Prix but only two have ever qualified and started a race, with Lella Lombardi being the only woman to ever score a point. The female racing driver club is an elite one. It looks like the female drought amongst British racing is going to continue as Wolff is rumoured to become the new face of Top Gear, another outlet with a reputation for antiquated views. Wolff has conceded that we are unlikely to see a female driver racing on the circuit in the near future. Former driver Janet Guthrie once answered criticism about her lack of physical strength with the response “you drive the car; you don’t carry it”. Sportswomen are quickly labelled as pioneers within their sports but why can they not be considered as athletes first? Wolff is one of many to highlight the pressure of feeling the weight of women everywhere on your shoulders. Why as a society and media do we feel the constant need to present a messiah in a sport, and then force a duty upon that female to change the world? Why is it that a man can be considered to just be competing, but that a woman is a revolutionary? Sadly, for this driver, it is lights out and away she goes.
